IPhone Secure and Virus-free?

In today’s world, the iPhone has a big name, and almost every other person carries a phone with that iconic metallic apple at its back. However, with growing popularity, the concerns regarding security and virus are equally rising. After all, we live in a world where crime through the virtual Internet (cyber-crime) is even possible. While the concerns stand justified in their place, please know that your apple mobile phone will provide the best security possible. But how? Well, let us find out!

Why is iPhone Safe?

Technically, viruses of all sorts require access to your phone to do their business (i.e., steal your data and rule over your device). The term access here does not only mean getting downloaded into your phone. But it also means interaction with other apps and manipulation of the system. Keeping in mind, the malware’s malicious activity, it is wiser for gadget owners to stay cautious. It’s better to opt for guarded devices and operating systems.

Along the same lines, in comparison to Android devices, Apple devices offer a safer experience to the user. According to Cybereason’s head of security, namely Amit Serper, Apple’s iOS has a rather walled-garden approach. The architecture of iOS is such that it does not allow app developers to access its source code. And also, it keeps the activity of each app restricted in a limited space. Thus, separating the operating system from the apps, maintaining a safe distance.

The design is more commonly known as sandboxing. As per Rich Mogull, the CEO of Securosis security, Apple’s approach towards blocking viruses and malware is the efficient usage of this design. It prevents the virus-containing apps from launching their hooks into the operating system. He explains, for example, if you download antivirus software. It requires deep access to your system to detect and defend your device against malware. Often, in this process, the application itself becomes a virus-causing agent. Thus, becoming harmful for your device. For that reason, Apple blocks excessive communication of apps in the first place. On the other hand, Android also allows sandbox apps. But then again, the operating systems give excessive permissions and liberty to the apps.

Another way in which Apple has made iPhones safer for the users is the fact that users can only install Apple-approved applications from the app store. Unlike Android devices, everything is not available on Apple’s app store. That’s because before making an application available for installation, the company conducts a complete investigation of it. Even the installed apps cannot access the photos and confidential information until you click on Agree/Allow pop-up permission boxes.

How and when does an iPhone get a virus?

Typically, it is very unlikely that an iPhone gets hacked or virus, considering the strict security control. However, at times, your apple mobile phone may experience viruses, especially if you have jailbroken devices.

These jailbroken devices have a slightly altered iOS system so that one has more control over the mobile phone. Hence, with a jailbroken iPhone, one does not need to abide by the apple restriction upon customization. You can delete the pre-installed apple applications and use platforms other than the apple store for downloading. Also, one can get paid applications, music, and other content for free on a jailbroken device.

Moreover, it is on the jailbroken apple mobile phone that one may experience an infestation of Worms. The Worms are an instant hacking feature (virus) that maliciously spreads throughout the device hardware. Usually, the Worms attack the devices through the opening of spammed e-mails and websites. An infected IPhone may lose all its data to someone else. The hacker may also gain control over the device and use it for criminal purposes.

If your iPhone is not jailbroken and still has a strange behavior, then it is probably because some applications need updates. But, if your phone got jailbroken, then it may possess a virus. It is suggestable to delete any suspicious application and prevent the usage of unverified sites. Also, you can back up the data before restoring your phone to factory settings.

Usage of Third-Party Apps

The apple mobile phone remains so much safe that the app store doesn’t offer any anti-virus applications. If there would have been even minor possibilities of virus, then the app store would have offered some anti-virus program. There are only a few third-party security applications available, such as McAfee and Trend Micro. These applications can find lost phones, back data, protect your privacy, and secure a web browser but cannot offer anti-virus functions. And, all these features are already available on iOS.
